Striving for Balance–Dark & Light– An Interview
First, I would like to thank Anjelin for doing this interview. I recently caught her reply to a discussion in a Pagan group speaking about Dark Paganism. I have met people who used this term before, and have used it myself, so the confusion caused by her confession was of no surprise to me. The word Dark seems to throw many for a loop, which is why I asked Anjelin to do an interview with us. Maybe at the end of it, we can sweep away some of the fearful and very misunderstood stereotypes stapled to her belief.
Now Anjelin was once a member of the Church of Satan but she has started a new path, an extension from, called The Order of Shadows.
C.H. Scarlett: What exactly is the Order of Shadows?
Anjelin : In Albany NY there is a church called the Correllian Nativist Church, run by HP Davron. He believes in balance of both the light and dark and had formed Order of Shadows, as a darker path and organization. He let it sit for awhile, not getting it going until recently. Lillee and John Allee are in charge of this organization and have asked some of us that they know to be on the counsel in getting it up and running. The Order of Shadows is for dark pagans and Satanists, but open to anyone who wants to learn. We just finished our seekers class which was on learning to have balance in our lives and that both the right hand path and left hand path are needed to find balance. This is also learning about our shadow selves, sometimes maybe not liking all we find out about ourselves, but learning to embrace and maybe change what we don’t like. It’s looking deep into ourselves. The book used in the seekers class, was Right and Left of Center by John and Lillee Allee. It’s about finding balance in our lives, both magical and mundane. It’s how we sometimes veer farther one-way at some times and veer the opposite direction at others. While trying to maintain at the middle pillar.
C.H. Scarlett: Yeah I believe in balance to. However, we all perceive or define Dark differently. Most people, even Pagans consider the dark to mean Evil. I never quite got that, since I am eclectic, however, to each their own. We also have many Light Workers, Love and Lighters, New Agers and so forth that connect the word Dark with Evil. When you tell someone you are a Dark Pagan, just what are the reactions? When you mention Satanism, I am sure that gets quite a reaction as well.

Cartomancy 101: 7. Heart, Diamond, Spade, Club Meanings
Hearts: This suit represents emotions. Example, love affairs, relationships, friendships, and feelings of affection. They rule over creativity, fertility, and or abundance. They are also connected to possessions , home, and educational matters. Hearts are uplifting in effects towards their surrounding cards. When there is several in a spread they mean the questioner will experience love and happiness EVEN if the other cards suggest that there will be problems along the way.
Clubs: represent words, negotiations, business matters. Energy, enterprise, progress, ambition, and personal growth. They can indicate imminent travel especially if this spread is about the persons career or ambitions, clubs or organizations or societies.
Diamonds: rule over all material matters such as money, estates, property and or status. PLUS whatever matters most to the questioner. Just like life can have angry outburst concerning certain topics, Diamonds in a spread brings color. They represent vibrant energy and vitality. But like the rest of the cards they are affected by the cards around them so if they are surrounded by say, Spades then their temper will show in such a way.
Spades: While hearts are considered the most favorite suit, spades are considered the most less fortunate since they indicate problems, arguments, disputes, worries, delays and losses. But like I said before, cards take on the energy of those around them so if spades are surrounded by hearts and diamonds then they will lose a lot of their bite. ALTHOUGH the miserable 10 of spades will remain UNCHANGED (Its meaning you will learn later) Theres the exemption to the rule. However,, remember as awful as Spades may seem…ideas and swift action are ALSO connected to them.
Cartomancy 101: 6. Choosing a Suit
Below, I have made a chart of the four suits and their meanings
by Traditional Coloring (Hair color, or eye color)
Personality Traits,
Astrological Elements, and or Careers. So after you chose your
court card: (King, Queen, Jack), decide what suit should they be
under?
You do not have to match every item to yourself or the person. For instance if you have Blonde hair but are not in the Heart’s career, you can still choose Hearts. In fact, you can choose two, three or just one category to go by.
|
SUIT |
TRADITIONAL COLORING |
PERSONAILTY TRAITS |
ASTROLOGICAL ELEMENTS |
CAREERS |
|
Heart |
Blond Or White Hair Blue or green Eyes Fair Complexion |
Warm, friendly, affectionate, loving, creative |
Water (Cancer, Scorpio Pisces) |
Caring Professions, creative and artistic professions, education |
| CLUBS |
Brown Hair Brown or Hazel Eyes Ruddy Complexion |
Energetic, Lively, luxury-loving |
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) |
Media, Travel , Business |
| DIAMONDS |
Mousy or Red Hair Green Eyes Freckles, Fair complexion |
Confident, practical, Materialistic |
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) |
Banking, Real Estate |
| SPADES |
Dark Brown or Black Hair. Brown or Black Eyes, Dark Complexion |
Powerful, intelligent ,melancholy |
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) |
Law, Big Business, traditionally all professions connected with |
Remember, choose a category per READING and stick with that category
in that READING. Don’t flip around in the middle of someone’s read.
For example. if you decided that Papa Smurf is the King of Diamonds
because he is a Capricorn, don’t change it later in the reading and
decide he is the King of Clubs because he is powerful, intelligent,
and melancholy.
Some books, (If you buy a book on this) will tell you to choose the
suit and court card and pull it out of the deck before you shuffle
and start. To them, it makes more sense to choose it and then
see if it comes up in the spread. If it does, make a note to
yourself on its position:
If it appears in the center of the spread , the questioner is in the middle of a important situation.
If its to one side, then the question is just beginning or ending
that situation.
If the card never appears in the spread, don’t panic. This happens for many reasons. One of
which is because the cards were focusing more on the people around
the questioner. So you never know what will happen.
Now, the suits in a spread will tell you a lot about the affinities
involved. If the court cards are all of the same suit then this
tells of a close relationship. For example, if your reading
someone who is the Queen of Diamond and the King of Diamonds appears
then you can assume that there is a relationship. Either a husband
or someone very important to her. It can be someone who she has a
deep bond with. It doesn’t have to be a marriage or boyfriend. It
can easily be a dear close friend, just someone dear to her. This
however, depends on the nature of the reading.
So remember, that will tip you off on who it is. If it is about her career then this
could be a close person she works with, a boss. If it is a JACK of
diamonds, remember it could represent her child or someone younger
than she is. Remember this may not mean someone extremely young
by age. If it is work related it could be someone who she is
training, or showing the ropes, or someone who merely looks up to
her. Remember that Jack doesn’t always represent age as in years,
but also someone we kind of look out for , that depends on us or is
learning from us.
Each Suit ALSO has an opposite number representing a negative
affinity. Hearts are opposed to Diamonds and Clubs are opposed to
Spades. So if a woman who is the queen of spades has a King of Clubs
in her spread, well this can only mean that he is or will bring
tension or difficulty. Maybe they are having a love affair that
isn’t going to well. OR he is a jealous colleague at her job. If a
King of hearts or diamonds shows up, though, with the Queen of Spades,
then you will interpret them in a usual way
Cartomancy 101: 5. The Symbolism of Court Cards
The court cards are as follows: Kings, Queens, and Jacks. These represent people. Either the person you are reading for (questioner), a person they know, or someone about to come into their life. In tarot, these cards can represent situations or desirable states of mind…where as in Cartomancy its a flat out person.
Kings represent men
Queens represent women.
Jacks however, are more open to the way they can be interpreted.
Concerning Jacks: They can be a child, or an adolescent of either sex ,especially if they are accompanied by a King or Queen.
They could symbolize a partner or someone in love or a person at work who is younger than the questioner. If they appear with a King or a Queen of the same suit, then the Jack could represent the THOUGHTS of that person. If this happens then the cards around them will take on the form of a more detailed aspect. They are loving thoughts if surrounded by Hearts, sinister or malicious ones if surrounded by spades and so on. (there will be more detail on that further on) A jack can also represent someone seeking knowledge from someone older.
Cartomancy 101: 4. Combining Tarot & Cartomancy
(For those who know or are learning tarot as well)
If you do not know Tarot, this may only serve as an interesting read. But be sure to tuck and save it somewhere in case one day you do take up tarot.
Now if you wish to study the Tarot and Cartomancy in a deeper way, you’ll realize that there are subtle differences in the interpretation of the Minor Arcana and its corresponding PIP playing cards. (The PIP cards are the cards in your playing pack that is labeled 1 thru 10. Any one of those cards is called a PIP card.) However, these variations are so slight that you can keep the meanings the same for each system except for the court cards.
Hearts are cups
Diamonds are Pentacles
Clubs are wands
Spades are Swords
As far as I know there are no reverse meanings that are a must for anyone to worry with. If, however, you know tarot, then know you have the option to do the reverse, or not to. So, if you are going to link these to your tarot cards you still have that choice ok.
Cartomancy 101: 3. Tarot, Astrology & Cartomancy
The differences between Tarot & Cartomancy
If you know tarot, then you will spot differences throughout these lessons. If you do not know tarot then like I said before , it doesn’t matter. However, some differences between Cartomancy and tarot are that Cartomancy does not carry with it some of the negative outlooks that people get when they whip out a set of tarot cards in certain crowds. (not that most people care who thinks what, but I’m just pointing these things out)
With Cartomancy there are fewer meanings to memorize then that of tarot. Since tarot decks consist of 78 cards while the Cartomancy is only 52. The tarot packs are larger because they have 22 trump cards of the Major Arcana and 52 cards of the Minor Arcana which is believed to have come from the Cartomancy cards.
Tarot cards also have four court cards (king, queen, knight and page) in each suit. But Cartomancy cards have three, Queen, King, and Jack. The suits have different names but share the same origins, and pretty much the same meanings.
I’ll point out more differences as the lessons go on. As this was to point out some of the obvious ones and to make you aware that there are differences.
Astrology and Cartomancy
There is a strong symbolic link between astrology and Cartomancy. All of which are based on numbers. There are 52 cards in a deck, matching the number of weeks in our years. (52 weeks in a year vs. 52 playing cards)
There are four suits which belong to four astrological elements.
Clubs correspond with the fire element…(Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius)
Diamonds are Earth elements ( Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn)
Spades are air elements (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
Hearts are water elements (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces)There are 13 cards in each suit just as there are 13 months in a lunar year (which used to be what our calendars were based off of in the Ancient World when the world used The Goddess, moon or menstrual calendar) These 13 months are still used in Chinese Astrology today.
There are also 12 court cards like there are 12 signs to the zodiac.
Cartomancy 101: 2. Choosing a Deck
Choosing a Pack Of Cards
The good news about Cartomancy is that you probably already have a deck of cards. Remember, you are using cards which have 52 count, consisting of Kings, Queens, Jacks, Ace’s, Hearts ,etc. However, you may wish to get a deck that is used only for predicting , not allowing others to use it for poker or other card games. Some people are hell bent on this but in the end it depends on you.
If you do go out to buy new cards, sometimes you can find ones strictly for Cartomancy. (Personally, though, I choose standard playing cards as the ones for Cartomancy that Tarot sites sell consist of more cards than 52 AND lean more towards tarot than Cartomancy in my opinion.) The ones made and labeled Cartomancy are rare as well and hard to find. For these lessons, I will be teaching Cartomancy with the regular playing cards you can buy in stores.
So, just like tarot you can choose a deck custom for you. There are Egyptian playing cards, Mystical ones, and all sorts. Go with what you like. if you are fine with a red deck of bicycle cards, then have at it.
I often tell people to choose a deck that they are interested in. If you hate the color pink, then choose a deck that doesn’t have pink in it. If you adore puppies, then go grab a deck with pics of puppies on it.
