The Black Dog Superstition
I have three German Sheppard’s. Actually, I have two, mother & daughter and then the son and grandson which is a German Sheppard Lab mix. The Lab was a fella named Bruno and he was the biggest lab I have ever seen in my entire life. In fact, I didn’t even believe that he was a full blooded Lab the day he snuck up on my property to play secret lover with my one German Sheppard, Silk. Now Silk takes after her father who was a solid Black German Sheppard and extremely large for his size but Bruno is the incredible Hulk of all Labs I swear. His owner, who was extremely apologetic, showed me his papers and once he proved Bruno was a pure blooded Lab, I started getting mental images of the dog working a Bo Flex and drinking Purina soaked steroids five times a day.
Anyway, when Silk had her litter, since I had mother and daughter already, one pup of course, called out to me. He was this big fat butter ball of a black pup…so big, he could hardly walk across my wood floors without slipping, sliding and falling flat on his belly.
Now while I do not have a picture loaded up on this computer of when he was a puppy, here is a recent pic and no, he isn’t done growing. However, this is Boss Hoss, or Boss for short and he is the love of my life, right in line with the rest of my animals. He is a total sweet heart. He follows me wherever I go and when I am in the garden weeding, he is right there digging along with me.
Anyway, Boss runs free on my property because there is plenty and he doesn’t run off. The picture doesn’t do his size justice however, let me just say, that if strangers happen down my driveway, they honk the horn and wait for me to come out and tell them they can leave the car. With two dogs sitting there by their door and then one big beast of a baby (Boss)—they get a little nervous.
The other day someone came to my house and refused to get out of the car even though I told them it was ok. She yelled from her cracked window, “Not until you tie the black one up!!!!”
Now the moment I stepped out on the porch, Boss came to my side and just sat there. He is not a hyper dog but he does do what my other dogs do and that’s grab a ball and wait for whoever comes to come out and play lol. I kind of wondered, ok…I could understand the fear if he was barking, but he is just sitting there making trails in the dirt with his wagging tail, with a ball in his mouth (basketball lol) so what gives? I finally leashed him and the lady stepped out of the car however, she wouldn’t come but so close. I asked her what she was so afraid of? Did a Black dog attack her? Was it his size? What?
Nope, he was just black lol. Was this some sort of racist thing against black dogs? lol, no, no, no. It is a common fear of black dogs in general. It seems as though that here in the South, particularly in the bible belt, people are truly afraid of Black Dogs because they are bad omens or bringers of death. I guess movies like the Omen doesn’t help, unfortunately which explains why so many people were even more afraid of my solid black German Sheppard, Saber. It doesn’t help either that when a Ambulance drives by with sirens on, my dogs all start to howl. During a BBQ that happened causing one person to actually leave because they were so spooked. I actually find it beautiful but hey, that’s just me. My dogs howl at the sound of any siren.
Sadly, even though Black Dogs make their glorious-not-so-negative claim in ancient cultures before all the wide spread fear, people today still cling onto a fear of them. They believe that seeing one means they are being told of a coming doom or that someone in the family will die. They believe that the dog is a Hell Hound.
Aside from that, Black Dog hold their fame in many ancient cultures as being respected and well admired. For instance, Hekate (eh-ka-te) shared some of her myths with black dogs. Anubis of Egypt, was shown with the head of a black dog. The Old Roman myths relating to the Great Goddess was also connected with the black dog. Romulus and Remus—black dogs. Diogenes, Sothis (Eye of the Dog star),Goddess Hel, Norse-Andgurboda, and many others—a positive relation to the Black dog. At one time it was said that the Black Dog in a household was more common than a Black Cat.
So while there are still people who fear the black dog, I can assure you that I have had two and neither has dragged me into hell or tried to eat me lol. I will continue to love my Boss Hoss even though most people nearly wet their knickers when they attempt a visit. Those who have no fear, though, say he is the most lovable animal they have ever met. I know he holds a special place in my heart—devil dog or not. *winks*

The 3D’s: Daimons, Daemons, Demons
It’s easier to just refer to these things as the 3D’s. This is an article I have been trying to do for some time. Mainly because of the fear factor and stereotypes involved. Since my mind lingers across the boundaries of the forbidden more than often—and I am not one to be told, “Don’t go there” because when that happens, I have already jumped the fence before they finish the sentence, AND I am deeply interested in what frightens people so much, the 3D’s have always caught my interest.
So with that being said, let’s explore another side to the 3D’s especially since they are a subject which inhabits my new book The Web & the Willow. (Fingers crossed, hopefully that will be published soon.)
Now we all know about Demons so there is little to say, as far as definition wise, concerning them. We know that we are supposed to be very, very, afraid of them and we know that they are pretty much employed by the devil himself. (you think they get benefits?)
We also know that even some people in the Occult INSIST that we should be weary of them but I am thinking that, that’s only because of a power trip. Why? Because those very same people in the Occult, and again, this is not everyone in the Occult or Paganism, claims to have the power to call them forth and have them do powerful deeds for them…only because that person of the Occult, has power enough to control these frightening beings.
Now I am not about to argue what another person does. I am about to point out, though, that there are people who do not believe in demons and there are people who believe in them but also feel they are wrongly misunderstood. In order to understand their argument, we must take a look at where the demon originated from.
Daimon
The words daemon, dæmon, are Latinized spellings of the Greek δαίμων (daimôn),[1]
Wikepedia
It’s even pronounced differently than Daemon or Demon which is said the same.
A Daimon (Di-mon or Di-moan—the two pronunciations I have found) was not a being feared in ancient times. In fact, the brilliant minds of Greeks named Socrates bragged these guys up in a major way.
Quote:
For instance, we know that Socrates possessed a personal daimon. "The favor of the gods," said Socrates, "has given me a marvelous gift, which has never left me since my childhood. It is a voice which, when it makes itself heard, deters me from what I am about to do and never urges me on." He spoke familiarly of this daimon, joked about it and obeyed blindly the indications it gave. Eventually, his friends never took an important step without consulting it. But the daimon had its sympathies, and when it was unfavorable to the questioner it remained absolutely silent; in that event it was quite impossible for Socrates to make it speak.
Of what order is this daimon, which manifested itself to Socrates in childhood but was also heard by Apollonius of Tyana only after he had begun to put into practice the Hermetic principles? "They are intermediate powers of a divine order. They fashion dreams, inspire soothsayers," says Apuleius. "They are inferior immortals, called gods of the second rank, placed between earth and heaven," says Maximus of Tyre. Plato thinks that a kind of spirit, which is separate from us, receives man at his birth, and follows him in life and after death. He calls it "the daimon which has received us as its portionment." The ancient idea of the daimon seems, therefore, to be analogous to the guardian angel of Christians. Source
It seems that Socrates was not the only one and with one simple Google of Daimon, a whole slew of information pops up supporting that.
Quote:
The Greek words daimon and daimonion express a determining power which comes upon man from outside, like providence or fate, though the ethical decision is left to man.(3) Source
Basically to sum up what a Daimon is, a personal familiar or spirit. It can be associated with Genius, a Roman term. They were believed to be forces of nature that played the part of messengers of the Gods…delivering them to that of man or woman. They were not believed to be good or evil…they were not feared. They were respected and pretty much, appreciated and adored. Many times, their voice came sounding like your own thoughts, warning you of something, preparing you, or urging you towards a better way.
So when did it all go south? When did the Daimon become the fearsome demon? I can’t really say for sure. I can say that they are like anything of the ancient world: Goddess, Magic, Sex, Rituals…for thousands of years they were sacred and honored until one day, they became forbidden and evil. As far as I can tell, and not meaning to point fingers here, certain in-the-beginning-Church leaders, had a lot to do with the 3D’s going to hell in a hand basket. (no pun intended)
The 3D’s became related and connected to anything Evil…Lucifer, Satan, Fallen Angels, Hell, Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Familiars, and the list goes on and on. An entire slew of study and practice surfaced because of them. Demonologists, Exorcists and in fact, any form of suffering or bad day could be blamed on them. If your cow died, not because the dang thing was old and milked to death but because a witch had sent a demon to kill it. If you sinned, then the demons would come in the still of the night and punish you. If you had a sexual dream, it was because a demon Lilith was visiting you at night. The belief that the Goddess’ blood which brought immortality and life, became the very thing that the Vampire hungered for in his innocent, unsuspecting victims and yes, the Vampire was a demon to. Men who shifted into a wolf, became nothing more than a demon wolf.
Do I believe in Demons? No.
The only evil I have seen is in people, unfortunately. So based on certain theories that the daimon is actually linked to one’s soul and is a higher level of someone’s subconscious…maybe demons are simply a man’s true nature when he decides to do evil. Maybe we simply fear ourselves and what some of us has become.
I once witnessed a few exorcisms and while it had me shaking a few times, I had to walk away feeling as though the people possessed was allowing themselves to be this way. They seemed addicted to being ‘evil’ and had no interest in morals or anything else. Some seemed addicted to being a victim of evil. So in that aspect, they were their own demon. So possibly, when the ancients believed that the Daimon was apart of us, inside us, then maybe it is our own soul or higher subconscious. When we choose to tip the scales of evil intensions, then our soul becomes demon.
Another theory is, the ancients believed that we could become daimon and that we were daimon. A hero dies and becomes a daimon according to stories told of the daimon of a hero who could undergo apotheosis, and if he succeeded then he ended up being a God. I know the Egyptians believed that when they died, they could become a God.I can’t see becoming a God at the flick of death so maybe there is a test afterwards. Some community service of the living that needs to be done. Or maybe its a little bit of both?
I do believe this…I am open to the paranormal because of my own experiences but I do not believe that there is anything in this world that can hurt us, (spirit, paranormal wise) unless we give it the power to. If there is a bad entity in someone’s home, then in some way that person is allowing it to reap havoc. Now it could be unintentional…by giving it their fear but I have also seen cases where the living have attached themselves to this force addicted to being a victim from it. For instance, I knew a man who claimed he had done everything under the sun to rid himself of the haunting he was suffering. It followed him from place to place etc. He was sure it was a demon. While others with me, who believe in the Devil’s legions, thought it was a demon, I didn’t. I think the man was mentally addicted to the chaos…because it made him stand out. It made his life an ongoing adrenaline rush, otherwise he just went to work, came home, watched the news and went to bed. Whatever was in his home, I think he gave it power…possibly some sort of poltergeist that he was creating himself.
That’s just my opinion though…just as, I do not believe in Satan’s demons—out to steal our souls and all of that. Everyone has to draw their own conclusions though…so have at it!
See you in the grave my dark and lovely bunch!

Shadow People, Shadow Beings, Shadow Spiders & Other Worlds Part 3
Part 3:
A little bit more on Hypnagogia –I wanted to comment on some of the information out there.
In the period of waking up or falling asleep sufferers of hypnogogia feel awake in the mind but paralyzed in the body.
The above statement is not completely true. Not all people experience paralysis. For those who do, they do not experience it all the time and some people only experience it in the beginning, if at all. Let me also point out that if you are going to research this, it is spelt Hypnagogia not hypnogogia. Hypnogogia is a common misspelling of the word.
That’s all I am going to say about Hypnagogia for now. We will go back into it later on once I weed out the info concerning it.
So what is on the agenda for today? Let’s go back to the Shadow People.
To refresh your memory:
Shadow people (also known as shadow men, shadow folk, or shadow beings) are supernatural shadow-like creatures of both modern folklore and traditional native American beliefs. According to folklore, they appear as dark forms in the peripheries of people’s vision and disintegrate, or move between walls, when noticed.[1][2]—Wikipedia
Possible explanations for Shadow People :
*Other World—dimension: Some people theorize that these beings come from another level of existence, other world or another dimension. Some believe that this dimension sometimes overlaps with ours, letting us catch a glimpse of them.
*Watchers: Some believe that these beings are what they call, “Watchers’. Now theories vary here and you will find people who actually relate them to the Watchers of the Fallen Angels. Some relate them to the Watchers of the biblical sense which did not fail God, or they have a whole other legend following. I think its important that people wash the ‘evil’ sense away from these theories though. As long as we fear it, hyping ourselves up, we will never discover the truth. Personally, I believe this is your own back yard. Nothing can hurt you unless you let it. Until we figure out what these beings are, its best we keep the fear at bay. This way we can come to some conclusion and investigate.
*Evil: With the above being said, I have to mention that one of the most common beliefs out there is that these beings are Evil, a devil or demons and some people go as far as to say , it is Lucifer himself. I can’t agree with that, sorry. I do not want to judge other people on their experiences but once people get passed the fear, there are too many positive and interesting testaments out there concerning this phenomena. I doubt that if it were Evil, that would be so. Fear kills us from discovering the truth…from fear comes ignorance and from ignorance, blindness…period.
*Ghosts or Spirits: It is one of the most common theories out there hovering right next to the Evil, demon one. People seem to believe that the Shadow spirit or being is just another type of Ghosts or Spirits. I think it is too simple of an answer BUT, if that’s all they have, then I respect that. Like us, they are just trying to figure this whole thing out right? And it is way better than the Evil thing.
*Astral projectors: Some people seem to think that these beings are someone astral projecting either from another dimension or from our own. Like people, they can be good or bad.
*Karma: Someone said that people begin to experience these beings once they start clearing out Karma. That’s all they said but later, I found many others who felt the same thing. Now even though this is at the bottom of the list for reasons, I thought it worth mentioning because it is a spreading reason.
*Succubus or Incubi: This is also at the bottom of the list and also fits under the whole Evil/Fear explanation. Apparently these people are having sex in their dreams and it is leaving them absolutely exhausted or drained.
_______________________________________
I think that is enough reasons. So lets focus on the lore surrounding them and or the Shadow of a person rather. That might help.
Egyptians called the shadow khaibut. The Egyptians believed that the khaibut was one of seven souls that each person had. The Roman word for shadow was umbra, also meaning ‘the shade’ or the ghost of an individual who went to a place called the Land of Shades. The land of Shades was believed to be underground or part of an Underworld and after the person died, their shadow went there. In Greece, people were known to dedicate their shadows or give them over to a God such as Zeus. This was considered to be a marvelous sacrifice but at the same time or later on, fearsome. For instance, it was believed that if a person went to the temple or sanctuary of Zeus Lycaeus, they would lose their shadows. For those who do not know, Lycaeus was believed to be the origin of Werewolves and from this particular story, maybe some of the lore concerning werewolves became born. In medieval times, werewolves and vampires were a phenomena that said that anyone cursed this way, lacked a shadow or reflection. They lacked soul.
Also in the medieval times, cornering a witch and proving her to be one, the shadow played a big part. If someone sold their soul to the devil then they had no shadow—hence shadow being linked with the soul again. In Europe, people believed that the shadow beings desired blood and without it, couldn’t be reborn. Superstitions and fear spread like the black plague concerning a person’s shadow. People refused to let their shadows fall on graves, a rumbling river or near a cliff.
In biblical times, curses were spoken on a person’s shadow. For example in Numbers 14:9 –“Their shadow is departed from them.” Saying something like that meant undeniable doom and was the lowest of low. I gather that in today’s times, it would be worse than throwing shoes.
Now kicking aside the superstitious fear concerning the shadow, according to Pagans and those before them, in ancient times…a person who did not have a shadow was NOT a demon, a vampire, a werewolf or someone who had given their soul over to any devil. They were believed to have went into some sort of eternal bliss.
Plutarch said, “At the end of the world, the blessed ones would be happy forever. In a state neither needing food nor casting a shadow.”
So if we take into consideration what the Ancients believed concerning ‘Shadows, Shadow sightings and people’, is it safe to say that the Shadow experience you have had, is indeed a spirit or ghost or someone who has passed on to the other side? Maybe, but then again I have to personally wonder…why are so many sightings the same? Why is the image that we see of the Shadow person always a common one? Is it that all dead people wear hats, or cloaks or are seen staring at the floor? Why are the shadows able to take full form or any form—animal, creature, man, while other dead people can only become orbs or when they take actual form, look like an actual person?
Where are the Shadow women? Not one person I have interviewed, have I heard or read any reports concerning a Shadow person looking like a woman. I have read and heard of small shadow figures being no bigger than a child but people do not connect them with actual children. it is only the size that they are compared to verses the others who can be up to seven feet or more in height. No women…unless you listen to the incredible but draining stories of sex that some seem to link with the succubus and incubus theories. With respect, those aren’t enough to me. There aren’t enough of them being told on or off the internet. So there doesn’t seem to be any pattern there for me except maybe someone is having some awesome dreams and the rest of us should be simply jealous lol.
If the Shadow beings are ‘Watchers’ then does this make them some sort of guardian? And why do some attack or is it like Carry said, it was her own fear doing this to her. If they are Watchers, then what are they watching? Surely they know more than we do. Is there a reason some see them and others do not? The ones who see them, do they have a link or connection to these beings while others may have a connection to some other paranormal type thing? I know it has nothing to do with open mindedness. I have interviewed to many people that had no knowledge and or belief in them. It just started to happen and that’s when they started looking for answers. Some incidents start happening when people are children while others happened as adults.
I think we will need to look more into the Underworld or Land of Shades, which again means there will be more parts to this subject. We also have to look into the lore of the Spider and try to help people figure out what that is that they are seeing. Like the shadow people, there are very few stories out there but even less concerning the spiders. The only answers that these people are finding is that either they are crazy, dreaming or it is being confused with some spiritual symbolism or dream analysis. These people like my friend Carry know that this is not a dream. So pretty soon we will explore that one and I am sure we will touch base with some of our previous subjects as well.

Carry’s Experience:
Whether you are a believer, someone who is experienced or a nonbeliever, I thought it a great add to these articles to include the experiences of my friend Carry. Why? Because Carry has been dealing with this phenomena for years and where she is now, her understanding or emotions, seems very intriguing to me. When she first started out, her story reflected that of many (those who are telling them now on the internet) and who are first awakening or discovering this whole mystery. She has felt the fear that many new comers are experiencing now. She may not have any new answers that can be laid in stone but where she started and where she has ended up, or is now, is a must tell. So I am going to tell it. I decided to send Carry questions and based on her answers we either built on that with more questions or went from there, like an interview because she felt that would be easier.
If Carry typed an lol (laughing out loud) then I included it.
Carry, when did all of this start? When did you first encounter Shadow People or beings and what were your feelings concerning them at first?
I don’t know how old I was exactly, I mean I think I was 19 or early 20’s? I’d like to say I was 13 but I still don’t know what happened that day when we saw what we did. If it wasn’t for my friends who were playing basketball with me, I’d probably say I was dreaming. Another story! (laughs) Yeah, 19 or early 20’s. Let’s just go with that.
And your feelings?
Scared. I thought they were ghosts or even demons. (lol)
Are you religious then?
If you are asking if I am a Christian and go to church, no but I do have my own personal beliefs ya know?
So why demons?
Well (lol), its not as though I knew what was going on. I mean at first you think your crazy and you need meds but then when it keeps happening, you know that’s not it. For me it was scary at first and for a long time after but now I kind of understand why maybe that was.
Ok, so what was so frightening about it? What exactly happened and when was the breaking point, that you knew you weren’t crazy?
My niece was 4 or 5 years old and they were visiting. I still lived at home or my parents at the time. I didn’t see my niece a lot but my brother and his wife were religious. I mean they went to church and everything so I didn’t exactly tell them about what had been happening to me. We aren’t really close ya know? Anyway, I was sitting in the living room kind of watching TV when my niece came up to me and tugged on my shirt. I turned around and she whispered in my ear. “Aunt Carry, there’s a man in your bedroom.”
Oh God, I think that would have given me chills, lol.
lol it did, I won’t lie but it also made me curious lol. I asked her what he looked like and she said he was wearing a long coat and his eyes glowed red and that his hair was long, black and that he kind of looked like a invisible shadow but she could see the shape of his lines, face etc. She said he was in the doorway now, watching us and that was pretty much all she said before her mother grabbed her, laughed her off and blamed it on the imagination of a child.
So what happened then?
Well nothing more was said about it but my niece did more for me then than she will ever know. She confirmed what I was seeing myself only I had tossed it off as dreaming it up.
Did she ever tell you anything more?
No, they lived far away and they didn’t like anyone encouraging her about that kind of stuff. It was funny though because about two years back, they came in for a family reunion and my sister in law brought it up. Suddenly she was open about little kids seeing what adults couldn’t and then started talking about that *man* my niece seen in my room. My niece was like, “really?” She said that she remembered seeing things as a kid but not of what and she said she believed that something scared her which made her stop seeing things. I always thought it was lack of encouragement lol but hey, who am I to say?
Ok so what happened after the niece confirmed the man?
Nothing worth bragging about. I seen him from time to time and something told me he was always there but the times that I seen him kind of scattered out until I wasn’t seeing him at all anymore.
How did you see him when you were?
I would see him standing over my bed, watching me when I slept. I would wake up and then he would be there. Or I would dream, I guess it was dreams, that he was taking me places, showing me things that happened in previous lives I guess? I know that I have never really had ghosts or spirits especially when he was around. I know people always say that their dead grandmothers or whatever would come and see them, visit but i never felt a connection like that to anyone in my family. Once they were dead, there was no reason to visit me. He was the only paranormal activity that I experienced or any link I felt to the other side if that makes sense.
So did you ever find out who he was or his name or anything?
Nope. I kind of gave him my own name which I wont say here. That’s between him and me ya know? I never understood what he was or what his exact connection was with me but later on in years I passed it off as not being able to comprehend it.
What do you mean, comprehend it?
Well its kind of like the sky or grass. How do we know its blue or green? Because we grew up being told it was. That is apart of our reality ya know? So maybe my mind couldn’t comprehend what he was or where he was from because its not apart of our reality lol. Maybe i couldn’t handle or understand it. Thinking back now, I can totally understand that. I mean until my niece confirmed it, I thought I was nuts or needed a padded room. I do know that I never thought he was dead though. Nothing ever gave me that impression and even now, I don’t think he is. Especially later on, when I started researching and investigating the paranormal, having had some other weird experiences, well he just isn’t dead.
Ok, so you said before you stopped seeing him so much. Obviously, because I know you, you started experiencing something. So can you tell me about that?
lol if I gotta but I do have to say that even though I didn’t see him as much, he was there if that makes any sense. Anyway, some years later I got an apartment. I got home from work, went to bed and woke up. I saw a young man standing over me, his head titled down in a hooded sweat shirt. he was just standing there, not really staring at me personally but where I was laying.
What did you do?
Went back to sleep lol. I mean I was fully awake and fully aware but I just passed it off as a spirit or something. I seen him a couple times after that, in the same way but I never felt anything bad from him.
So was the man around at this time?
Not in the way that I was seeing him. I just started seeing other things like the hooded sweat shirt guy. I didn’t know that other people seen him to. I mean I found that out in the past year or so because of the internet lol. In fact I totally forgot about the sweat shirt man until I went searching about Shadow people.
And what made you search out them?
Well after I moved from the apartment, I moved to a house. In that house some crazy things started happening. I started experiencing what you and me call the Twilight. I was trapped somewhere between awake and sleep. The stuff that was happening to me then kind of freaked me out. No, actually they did freak me out. I would sleep with the lights on lol. It was a Shadow but it never took the form of a man but of shadow shapes like once a dragon I think it was. Its shadow would kind of swallow up a whole side of the room or just black out everything over me. And it would literally hold me down, paralyze me so that I couldn’t even scream. I didn’t know what it was but I knew it wasn’t my imagination. The temperatures in the room would change and there would be cold or intense spots. I had a little dog once who would literally bark and bite at the real intense spots. Sorry for that dog but I used to experiment lol, throwing him towards the spot he was barking and biting at. the dog would jump back, get real ferocious and then hide under my bed, growling and so on. Its funny though because even though I was scared to death, it never struck me or really attacked me or anything. Maybe I snapped out of it before it could? It was kind of my own fear of it that was hurting me or at least that is what I think now.
You think it was something to do with the house?
I didn’t know what to think. I do know that I moved about three times after that and it continued. Off and on and I never knew when.
Does it still happen?
Nope. I got determined that I was gonna see it through when it happened again. I would not wake up and I would not get scared. I started to really break it down. I mean what was I afraid of? Was it the energy? That made sense to me. I mean we get kind of comfortable thinking we are home alone so we go do stuff that we normally do. Suddenly we catch something out of the corner of our eye or we feel a presence. Because we are not used to it or don’t understand it, it rattles our minds. I accepted it, in a sense, and it no longer scared me. So it stopped happening. Something new started happening but not the fear and what I thought were attacks.
Which was?
Well lol…I started seeing the shadow people straight out. I didn’t have to be sleeping or well, in Twilight. They would show up and if the energy was to intense, then HE would show up and it would be gone.
Oh so the man your niece saw came back?
Well like I said, I always felt him there but yeah, as far as seeing him again, he came back, once in a blue moon that is.
Alright, so what else changed?
Well about this time I got a computer and discovered the wonderful world of the internet. It didn’t help as far as figuring out what these shadows were but it did help me in the same sense that my niece did…that there were others who were experiencing this stuff. There were a lot of people stuck on the demon notions but seriously, I don’t think they are demons. And I think its their own fear attacking them, not the shadows but that is based on my own experience and what I overcame. So I guess I have no right to say that about them…its just my opinion lol.
This was when you found out about Twilight though, right? Or the technical name for it which is Hypnagogia?
Yeah because you emailed me the information lol. But that was in the past year or so I guess. It’s a comfort knowing that others are experiencing this but its a bummer to know that a lot of people think the devil is playing tricks with them or tossing it off as sleep disorder.
So why do you think this is happening more and more and what do you have to tell them people who are experiencing it?
Well I think that its a mix to be honest of happening more and more and then having a way to let millions know that it has been happening. I mean the internet is pretty awesome. But for the ones who are just starting to experience it, I think its because our minds are starting to open. Maybe the Veil between worlds is thinning. Maybe something has changed that these beings are now noticeable. I don’t really know to tell the truth. I mean if the ozone layer can thin then why can’t a veil lol.
As far as people just starting to experience it, separate your own fear from the shadows energy and how that makes you feel. I swear I believe, I was holding myself back with mine and sometimes I still have to get a grip. the thing is, if people are suddenly seeing them then there is a reason. So try to comprehend that and what you are seeing the best you can.
Ok as far as getting a grip, I think you mean the spiders. That seems to be something wide spread and people are really struggling for answers there. There aren’t many who are giving them a break where that is concerned.
Oh yeah, like I was chatting in a chat room one night when this guy was yelling about reptilians and planet X but then when I brought up spiders, he treated me like I was off my rocker lol. Whatever. The spiders are a new thing and I had a real hard time dealing with those.
Oh yeah lol that arachnophobia thing.
lol well you know me. I never liked em. But, they helped me get over that I think. I started researching some cultures that believed in a spider woman or goddess like the American Indians so I thought maybe there was something connected with the spiders and that. I hope you do an article of all the stuff you helped me find.
Yes, I planned on it. So tell me more about the spiders.
Well I always experience them during Twilight and I don’t see the shadow figures anymore or haven’t since the spiders. They started in the last house I rented and would scare me so bad that I would snap out of the Twilight into a full awake zone lol. Like the shadows, I got fed up with it and decided that I would just deal with them. The last time I saw them, they had spun these thick webs around my hand. My boyfriend said that he actually woke up and watched me waving my hand through the air, studying something on my hand until I snapped out of it, got up, got a drink of water and went back to sleep. I remember what I was doing. In Twilight, its not like your dreaming and can’t remember. I just know I came to terms with it. When I was waving my hand, it was like the web was blowing in a breeze and the trails of it would fade and evaporate. I even remember the smaller spiders which are quite bulky and fat, crawling around my hand and legs. I didn’t freak out though. I just got bored and went into full awake mode. Nothing has happened since.
It sounds to me that you keep going through tests or maybe we can call them that for the sake of theory. The shadow things scarred you until you got a grip on it. Then the spiders, until you got a grip on it. So I wonder what’s next?
I don’t know lol but I am open to find out. I mean, I can never serve any of this up as proof to anyone else but as far as my own curiosity, I am so ready for the next level. Its all so strange to me but perfectly normal all at the same time. I know what it must sound like to other people who have never experienced any of this but to me, its like breathing. I don’t try to force it but when it happens, I hang on every bit of it. Instead of being afraid, I try to experience as much of it as I can. I hope more people start sharing their personal experiences because people like me are always clicking, searching and reading them.
*END*
I personally thank Carry for sharing her experiences with me over the years and for letting me do this interview for my articles. There will be a part three but since there is so much to cover, I don’t know if it will concern dimensions, spider lore or what. I can promise that there will be a part 3 and probably more after that.

Helpful Tips for Struggling and Unpublished Writers…
I will be the first to admit that getting here was a collision of nerves and unexplainable struggle. Every writer who ever decides to make themselves professional will soon walk a very difficult, long and unimaginable line. I say ‘line’ because its not wide enough for a path nor is it as easy to walk.
The moment you decide that you want to be a professional writer, you are going to have to swallow some very hard things.
#1. If your out to be the next Nora Roberts or Steven King—get over yourself (laughs). It may happen and I am not trying to kill your dreams but you have to accept that it might not happen. Meaning, you will not find yourself rolling in a pile of money no matter how great a masterpiece you have. Every writer must struggle and realize that they have just hit the pavement of one of the most underpaid professions out there. So if money is your agenda—then sit down and figure out another reason why you are doing this because you are going to need it.
&
#2. You will have to work your butt off, figure out how to do things which you never thought you would have to do; such as creating blogs, writing even when you don’t feel like it, working with an editor (more on that later) and selling yourself to the public by creating book trailers, advertising and soooooo much more!
So, I can not tell you what you HAVE to do but I can tell you what I have learned along the way.
A. Find someone who will give you constructive criticism concerning your work. This means you need to find someone you can trust and that someone needs to be able to tell you bluntly good or bad. THAT also means you need to simply swallow and accept what they say. I have had people ask me for my opinion and I have commenting on something as little as their grammar, finding them loosing their minds afterwards. I had one person scream at me, “I will not change or compromise my work!” After I praised his/her story and only mentioned that they forgot to insert a ‘period’.
You MUST develop a thick skin. If you ask for help, then respect the one who gives it and do not attack them after doing so. WHICH is why you need to find someone you trust—make it easier for you to swallow. You still need that thick skin though because if you are published, you will have plenty of people who look at your work and will rip you apart, not just praise you. Accept the good and bad.
B. Make connections—either purposely or grab onto the ones who just happen your way. I had a few published writers help me allot. They mean the absolute world to me, particularly one, Christopher C. Newman, who continues to help me to this day. That fabulous horror writer will never know how much I appreciated that. So never take for granted anyone who gives you advice and so forth. Leave the vanity at the door.
C. Stop using words like: I cant, I don’t want to, I don’t have time. You made the choice to make this your career. No one scooped you up and made you do it. So when opportunity knocks on your door, leave the lame excuses under the rug.
I can’t tell you how many people say those things to me and it really throws me for a loop. There are certain things that a publisher expects from you, that you must do just because you want to get your name out there whether your published or not and those things are being done by nearly every other professional writer…creating blogs, writing articles, doing reviews, joining groups, networking, building web sites, etc, etc, etc. Nearly every single writer I know has children, families, full time jobs, after school activities, school, and the list goes on and on. But every single one of them find the time, no matter what to write and do the endless list of other things that they must do. So put your big boy or big girl bloomers on and get over it. It has to be done.
I didn’t know how to make a book trailer but my publisher needed one—so guess what, I learned. I have a hard time managing life, kids, family, and every other chore of my ‘real’ mundane life but I still find the time to see to my writing career. I am not trying to be cruel but I am trying to show tough love because believe me, no one who is taken seriously in this profession is going to baby you or look for excuses. And if they don’t, be thankful for it because they will bring out the very best in you!
D. Listen to your editor, publisher, PR people, and or agent.
THEY know what they are doing and you have to have faith and trust in them. Why? Because if you don’t look good and do good then they are out their investment. They can also get word spread around pretty quickly about how difficult you are—and there slams a big stain in your career.
1. Editors—I was very blessed to have received a hard core, no play editor. Helgaleena of Dark Roast Press. If she has a problem with something then she says so, flat out. Now I may explain why it is that way but if she says, nope, wont work—then its gone and I create something I hope is better. If it isn’t better—then we go right back to it. SHE LETS ME KNOW!!! She is the expert concerning words, grammar and everything else. I trust her because so far she has only brought out the best of me. Editors (good ones) can pick up what you may not see in yourself. They home in on what you are capable of and demand nothing less. So respect them. Don’t fight them if you have a good one. Your work will shine because of it.
2. Publishers and Agents– They took your work on and before you signed with them you should have had belief in them as they will now have belief in you. So don’t fight them either. Let them do their job.
3. PR people–if they tell you to write a BLOG and articles, then do it. If they tell you to submit to a reviewer, then do it and do it right. Again, this is their area of expertise so work with them and not against them.
E. Remember how much of a challenge it was to write that book? Well once your published, that will be considered the easiest thing you did (laugh). Again, touching base on what i have previously said, You are entering the world of the lowest paid profession out there and the amount of work you do for virtually no income is tremendous. So prepare yourself and focus on another award other than money.
F. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!! If you came into this business thinking you are going to land a $100,000.00 advance deal with one of the biggest New York publishers, then think again. get that out of your mind right now and choose a more realistic starting point. There are tons of options, Other publishers, E-publishers, small presses, magazines, etc. Choose one that is right for you. I chose a smaller press that does Epublishing/Ebooks. Next year sometime or another, they will go to print but right now, I am hooked on Ebooks because we live in an electronic age. I went with a smaller press that will probably be HUGE one day only because the woman who owns it knows her stuff and has the degrees to prove it. I wanted one on one attention and I get that. Reality in my mind was, I will have to start at the bottom and work my way up—just like all other writers do. I wanted to be somewhere that would grow with me, believe in me, praise me and scold me if needed. So decide what’s realistic for you.
***
Again, I am not out to frighten you but prepare you in the same way people prepared me. I wouldn’t complain at all and haven’t because this is what I wanted. EVERY DAY I am challenged and I am eating it up. Every day I am thankful no matter how hectic my world is now. For my children I did this…and for them I keep going.

Types of Vampires: Strigoii, Strigoi Part 1
The Strigoii or also spelt Strigoi are one of my favorite types of Vampires to write about or discuss aside from one more which I won’t reveal just yet. They are the most popular and common species of Romania and believe it or not, have been the foundation for the imagination of many writers and their novels. There are two types of Strigoii, living and dead. We will be discussing both.
Males are called Strigoii, Strigoi which come from the Latin word Strix. (Striges–plural) These types of vampires can change or Shape-shift into a flying mammal. (Now we know how Dracula turns into a bat. Is it possible that he was a Strigoii?)
Dead Strigoii were those who died unforgiven of something, sins but usually by parents. Those who died before they wed were also high candidates to become Strigoii. If a cat walked over a dead body or the person died filled with pain or having regrets, they to became Strigoii. Precautions had to be taken which are as thick and heavy of a list as ways to become one. But you could bet your bottom dollar a priest would have to be involved, some form of decapitation and cremation.
If the name Strigoii is referred to someone who is living then it would mean that person was a witch, wizard and or made this their means of employment. Funny enough, much of what I have read on these creatures, it seems that some lore suggests that the living Strigoii were a good thing. In fact, they could use their magic to protect humans, particularly children, from being harmed by a dead Strigoii. But every source has its own meaning or version. In some, a living Strigoi was a witch who did favors for a dead Strigoii by way of magic and sooner or later, would become Vampire for their services.
In Romania, a female is called a Strigoica or Strigoaica. She can be either dead or living. If she is living then she is a witch, can shape-shift and has great power. During life, she takes power from anything having life so when she dies, she then turns into a dead Vampire. Priests often warned women to harness this ability they easily had or else after life, they would be severely punished for it by becoming a vampire.
The stories seem rather silly but it seems these women (living) were obsessed with milk and cows. They would suck all the milk from these cows so that no one else had any.
In one story, a Strigoica had no cow of her own so she got herself a wooden one. With her magic she would milk this wooden cow and the milk from everyone else’s cow would magically come through hers. She was so obsessed with milking her wooden cow that neighbors started to complain to the local priest. He investigated the matter and found the woman milking her wooden cow morning, noon and night. So the priest had the girl make butter from the milk she had bewitched from the wooden creature. He then told her to go out into the forest one morning and throw the butter on a tree.
“In three days,” he told her, “Go back to that tree and tell me what you find.”
She did what the old priest said and in three days was horrified by what she found. When she returned to the tree she saw different kinds of serpents and all kinds of horrible creatures slithering around and eating up the butter. When she ran back to the priest, frightened nearly to death, he warned her what would happen if she continued her naughty ways. “If you keep stealing the life from this world then those creatures will suck your blood for all eternity in the next!.” He warned. And that seemed warning and moral enough to frighten many a congregation.
Something even more interesting in these stories is that Vampires, Evil Witches, Werewolves or whatever else that went bump in the night, were not forced to return to their graves at dawn but rather at 3 am in the morning.
So those of you who awake at 3 am each night for no reason in your beds…are you returning to your mortal bodies which just might be the form of your graves in this life? (Insert Vincent Price evil laughter here—Muahahahahahahaha!)
Who knew this particuliar Vampire would be so popular that we would need a …

Vampire Myths & Lore: DHAMPIR, dhampir
Written by C.H. Scarlett
DHAMPIR is a very interesting race. It’s so interesting that I used the term and created my own version of its meaning for Bound By Blood: The Awakening. However, these articles I am writing aren’t really based on ‘my’ definitions. They are based on the actual myths and lore that gave them life and meaning in the first place.
The legends about those who are DHAMPIR reminded me of the Van Helsings we read about or the Vampire hunter stereotypes which are used in many works of fiction despite what name they have or are given. One example is the movie and character, Blade. Read further and then lets see what you think.
DHAMPIR, dhampir, or dhampires (plural) comes from Slavic myths and or lore. According to Gypsy or Roma lore, he was the chief slayer of Vampires. He was considered to be the partner of the devil and even though that seems like a frightening title, it brought people peace of mind because he was the one who protected humans from what was considered evil.
In these stories, a dhampir can only be a man. His parents must be a vampire and a human. Usually these stories came about concerning the Mullo and their insatiable sexual desire for one who was still living. Particularly the wife or lover they left behind or were denied before or when they died. It is the result of this union that a dhampir is born.
I can’t tell you how many debates I have witnessed by those who argue that a vampire, based on legend, can not be party to the conception of a child. If we look at the actual myths and lore though of other cultures and even some ancient ones, we can see something quite different. Not only are their various types of vampires out there but some of them can indeed become pregnant or impregnate.
The dhampir, however, had a very important part to play in history. He was believed to be a magician who had the gift of seeing what others could not see, the Vampire. He also possessed the ability to destroy this fearsome creature of the night when no one else could.
So why would a person need a dhampir and his special sight to see a Vampire?
Not all species of Vampires were visible. You have to remember that ones like the Mullo were vampire spirits, who became so after their physical bodies died. They were not solid forms of flesh like you and I. The only one who seen these spirits were the victims but only if the Mullo wished them to. I think this only added to the fear factor where Vampires were concerned. After all, a Vampire in full view could be frightening but a Vampire that you couldn’t see? Now that’s horrifying especially when you live in a time where people had great fear of spirits, devils, evil and anything else that their superstitions made them weary of.
So based on the time frame and its fears, a dhampir had a great importance in society. He also had a ritual that was expected of him. He was paid handsomely and he was praised like no other.
Now as for his ritual….if you lived in those times and witnessed the actions of a dhampir, it might go something like this:
He arrives and makes a big show by sensing the invisible Vampire. His highly attuned senses can smell a horrible stink even if the villagers can not. He even takes his shirt off, holds it up and looks through the sleeve of it as if its a telescope or some viewing device, claiming that he can see the Vampire in this way. Sometimes he might even allow a villager to look who can then see what they could not see before. This is the magic of the dhampir.
Once he finds the Vampire, he is given a gun or some sort of weapon. The hunt begins. He never goes alone either. He needs villagers to go with him to witness the slaying. But there are rules to follow. They must be completely silent and they must do everything the dhampir says. The hunt can go on for a very long time, during which the dhampir will set up traps. Once the Vampire is dead though, the dhampir must then record everything in detail for the records of the township or village. He has to present evidence, is searched to make sure he didn’t use anything to fake the death or create a ruse that there was a Vampire to start with. He has to describe what the Vampire looked like, species, gender, lair, who he or she was in life and any other detail you could possibly think of. So it seems that the village might have welcomed him easily into their community in the beginning but in the end, before they paid one cent, they were much more stern and demanding.
In most legends or lore, the dhampir could pass on his powers to the sons he bore, so this became a family tradition or business. Most importantly, it kept the magic and power of that bloodline going so people always had someone to rid them of their vampire problems. Even in modern times, there are claims that dhampires live and breathe. So if you ever have a problem…..

Types of Vampires: Baital
I have been researching vampires and other creatures for about twenty–plus years and it never ceases to amaze me that the more I read about different ones, the more obvious it becomes as to where movies and writers get their inspiration from. I think your going to have a taste of that here as we review Baital.
Baital is an Indian term for vampire. The word used before Baital was VETALA. It was believed to be an evil, spirit of mischief that possessed and brought a dead corpse back to life. Somewhat like how a demon possessed the Vampires in the Anne Rice books—or that’s what this reminded me of.
Now if this bad spirit wasn’t taking over a person’s dead flesh and you happened to catch it in its true form, it would look like half a man and half a bat including wings. His skin is very tough and iron-like which means he is hard to kill. He is also known for being very clever. Think about Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Love Never Dies—when Dracula is with Mina in the insane asylum and is interrupted—he takes the form of a bat–like man with huge wings before he explodes into a bunch of rats and disappears.
The Baital is known to ‘hang out’ where he finds his corpse in most cases. If the dead person was hanged then maybe the Baital will be hanging upside down from that very spot. So, if you finally had enough of your next door neighbors loud music and throwing trash in your yard and decided to off him, but now he is fumbling around by your windows at night looking pretty scary — I’d suggest you go looking in the Out House where you dumped the body come the light of day. It’s going to be a nasty job but it’s a lot better than being his midnight snack. (wink)

Types of Vampires : Baobhan Sith
By C.H. Scarlett
In Scottish Lore these are Vampire Fairies. They take the image of young, beautiful women who are noted to wear green. Its interesting because Baobhan Sith happens to be a Highland term for a Banshee and is normally used towards deadly, evil SUCCBI. The legends tell that the Baobhan Sith find men and dance with them until the men are so exhausted that they can’t fight or just pass out. It is then that the Vampire Fairies feed on them.
Weaknesses: Iron –really the only thing that I have found that will kill them. In some stories it explains that they fear sunlight but it does not say as to why or the effects the sun has on them.
Legend tells us that they love hunters and any young man who is found wondering around after dark. One folktale of Scottish descent speaks of four young hunters who didn’t return home once the moon rose. Like most stories in days which the IPOD or CD player didn’t exist, they began to entertain themselves while one of the Hunters played music. The other three hunters began to dance around a small fire when one of the three actually wished he had a female partner to dance with.
Out of nowhere his wish took flight and four very beautiful women appeared. Three of them danced while one stood quietly by the music maker. When the one who made the music noticed blood falling from his three friends; he panicked and ran away hiding himself among their horses. The vampire fairy encircled him until dawn unable to claim her prey because of the iron shoes the horses wore on their feet. The angry Baobhan Sith was forced to disappeared for the sake of her life. The hunter returned to the place he and the others took shelter and was horrified by what he found. There was his three friends dead and drained of all their blood.
Moral of the story? Who really knows if there is one? Why do these stories exist? Were there really Baobhan Sith lurking about under the cloak of night waiting to find some poor man who easily fell for her charms?
Maybe these stories were created by women who wanted to make sure their husbands remained faithful and thought twice before they decided not to return home. Maybe too many women were fed up watching their men leave at dawn to hunt only to return some days after having no kill to show for it. Those women later hearing rumors that they spent those days at the local brothel, perhaps?
Or maybe the Baobhan Sith existed and were a human woman’s means to rid of her cruel husband or a lover who had tossed her to the side? Maybe the Baobhan Sith cared nothing for human women at all and thought of men as cattle. The possibilities are endless as are the theories, but in the end….only you can decide.

Types of Vampires: Mullo
Every culture has their own collective tales concerning the supernatural or better said, what goes bump in the night.
One of my favorite places to explore is Romania even though you will see me ramble away in the future concerning much more ancient of cultures such as Egypt.
Romania has built a historical empire on the vampire though. I doubt there is a need to name famous writers who based their vampire novels on this fertile, Gothic haven. But we have to sooner or later realize that there was something more than interesting being whispered upon the trembling lips of villagers for so many to seize this golden writing opportunity. So that is my goal here. To drag you along every wondrous avenue of information that I went down myself especially since this is my chocolate—where all these dark and delicious creatures stem from. I didn’t want to base my novels on what writers’ created though. I wanted to base my characters on actual myths and lore and build from there. After all, Bram Stoker did not give birth to the vampire as I like to say. The Vampire gave birth to him. So in this article I will discuss the Mullo who is a vampire based on Roma (Gypsy) belief and lore.
Interestingly enough, Mullo means ‘living dead’. They are restless spirits who rise up from their damp and darkened graves to either avenge their own deaths or have sexual encounters with those they couldn’t have or were obsessed with in life. If a person died who didn’t like you and then became a Mullo, well you could most certainly expect to see them wrecking some horrid havoc where you’re concerned.
The Mullo seem to be invincible except where their lovers are concerned. They have a sexual desire that is insatiable. The Mullo have been known to ask their lovers to join them in the grave or to marry them. Legend has it that the lovers have even been left weak or have become ill by their encounters with them. That’s how truly powerful their passion can be. In fact, women have been known to become pregnant which is where the term ‘DHAMPIR’ comes from. In some lore, a DHAMPIR can only be a male.
In order to destroy a Mullo, one must scream a Romanian curse at it. “God send you burst!” Or you can strike them in the tummy with an iron needle or throw some Holy Water. A DHAMPHIR has the power to kill them by shooting them or knifing them with a dagger. Black Dogs, Black Cocks or White Wolves can also kill a Mullo.
In order to destroy a Mullo though, it has to be done 40 days — 3 to 5 days after burial. After that, they are indestructible.
